I guess I'm doing allright

Post by Maxus »

Today's my father's birthday; he's 54.

I'm eating a hamburger and drinking a Diet Coke. I don't exactly LIKE Diet Coke, but it's not a bad accompaniment.

The rest of the family (dad, mom, two sisters) are outside swimming in the pool we've had for all of a week. Well, actually, they're coming in now; it's started thundering and it's the time of year for roaring thunderstorms (three inches of rain yesterday in the space of a few hours, and lightning struck the tree outside of my window--about five feet from where my back was at the time). I came in to eat lunch and get the french fries started for everyone else.

I have a wireless network set up now (did that Friday) and I can use the computer anywhere in the house and means more than one person can be using the internet now.

I'm also going to run an online game tonight, and break a couple of people I know at school in on DnD.

And I can't help but remember a line I read in a book the other day. I can't immediately find the line, but it went something like:

"Angst and depression are chic and stylish. But happiness is good. It's not cool, but it's good."

And I'd put up a YouTube link to Travis Tritt's 'Great Day To Be Alive' but I can find a decent version of it.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

I have to say that the more I see, the more I realize that yes, happiness is a choice. You can moan and complain and be fucking negative, or you can accept that nothing is perfect and resolve to enjoy what you have.

I'm flying to Kuwait tomorrow at 6 AM, en route to Mosul, Iraq. I have to be at the arms room at 11 tonight, and I'm going to be sitting around in a holding cell for 6-7 hours or more if the flight gets delayed. I'm leaving my wife to go to a miserable hell where I can very possibly die within twenty minutes of arriving.

But I'm happy. I should only be there 4-5 months, because I'm joining a unit midtour. I actually have a loving and supporting spouse. I've finally left the unit I've been stuck in for seven years for a new scene. When I get back I'll have at least a year to enjoy with my wife and friends.

People always bitch about how life isn't going the way they want, and they're not happy. But they never do a damn thing about it.

I'll trail off on my rambling now. I hope I'm in line with the spirit of your post Maxus.

It's all good.

I hope everything works out for you and you make it back home safe.

What will be, will be. I'll do everything in my power to come home. In the mean time, I should be able to check in now and then. Thanks for the well wishes.

You poor bastard. Are you 3ID? I had heard they'd be the last rotation. If I had stayed with them, I might have been the first in and the last out of Iraq.

No, I'm an MP branch of 31st Chem. Dunno who we'll be attached to.
